A New Critical Metals Exploration Target on the Avalon Peninsula
Northern Shield Resources has two claim groups totalling 292 km² on the Cape St. Mary’s peninsula, southeastern Newfoundland. The project targets two distinct styles of critical metal mineralization — porphyry copper-gold and magmatic nickel-copper-cobalt sulphides — in an underexplored portion of the Late Proterozoic Avalon Terrane.
The Cape St. Mary’s project is a direct outgrowth of Northern Shield’s ongoing exploration at Root & Cellar on the Burin Peninsula, where six years of systematic work has established the Avalon Terrane as a legitimate porphyry copper-gold province. The company’s approach at Cape St. Mary’s follows the same methodology that led to the Root & Cellar discovery: identifying and ground-truthing anomalies in government-collected regional till geochemistry. In addition, Northern Shield believes that the east-west rift system in which Root & Cellar is located continues across Placentia Bay to the south end of the Avalon Peninsula where it intersects a north trending rift system.
Location and Infrastructure
The Cape St. Mary’s project benefits from exceptional infrastructure proximity. Vale’s Long Harbour hydrometallurgical processing facility — one of the few custom-built nickel processing plants in the world, constructed to process Voisey’s Bay concentrate — is located approximately 70 km from the project area. A discovery of magmatic Ni-Cu-Co sulphide mineralization at Cape St. Mary’s would benefit from proximity to this existing processing infrastructure, along with established road access, port facilities, and electrical power on the Avalon Peninsula.
